HOW TO GET WORK EXPERIENCE

HOW TO GET WORK EXPERIENCE

We live in world governed by, among other forces, economic reality. Your choices when it comes to finance will depend of whether there is demand for what you are offering and how much one is willing to pay for it. While some people choose the entrepreneurship option to meet their financial needs, most people go for employment, which means creating a solid case for why the potential employer should ignore everyone else and hire you. This often comes down to experience. So you need a job to get experience and yet experience is what makes you get the job to start with. The question therefore is how to get work experience and there are a number of ways.

1 INTERNSHIP

This is the common way to boost your CV. If you are a student then you will have to start with abandoning the need to be paid while interning, don’t get me wrong money is important but in the grand scheme of things what exactly are you being paid for? Notice at this point all you have is your energy and zero skills. So to solve the money issue, rather than wasting time in college or campus, get an introduction letter while you are still a student, go a company of your choice and explain to the human resource person that you are willing to create some hours out of your schedule to intern in their organization, don’t worry about the question of papers at this point because the only thing worse than unpaid internship is unpaid internship when you have already graduated. So if you are not going to be paid then it better be when you are still in college.

2 VOLUNTEER IN A FOR PROFIT COMPANY

Assuming a company of your choice is giving you a hard time with how they only deal with graduates or other issues of such nature then it’s time to change your pitch. Rather than seeking internship, ask to be a volunteer. Ensure it’s a for profit company with a big enough brand that their recommendation will help open doors. The reason why this approach is effective is because at the end of the day volunteering sound less expensive since you are doing it out of your own desire and also you get to dictate the times you are available, which I still insist should be when you are in school, that way when you graduate you have paper qualification and work experience unlike your friend who will be looking for experience after graduations

3 OFFER TO HELP OUT ON NEW PROJECTS

While the above two seem to assume that you completely have no job, the issue of how to get work experience will still affect a person who is trying to switch jobs as well. Such a person may not have the leisure of interning so what option do they have? If that is you then look for a project being undertaken by the organization you already work for and offer to help out of your free time. For instance if you want to move to a finance sector then join the finance bit of a project your company is undertaking. Of course that will mean concealing your intentions to move and being very good friends with the person in charge of such projects.

CONCLUSION

Truth is you will have to make sacrifices and delay gratification if you are to gain whatever it is that you need. So as a student strategically skip the payment bit first and get the work experience when you are still at school and as someone working, sacrifice your extra time and gain that experience, that way how to get work experience isn’t the one question between you and the job.
