FORMS OF UNEMPLOYMENT

Nature of Employability has changed

One thing that comes out clearly when you pay attention to history, even if you never bothered with history in school, is that as human we are always looking for ways to be efficient in terms of how we get things done. We went from simple hunting, farming to robotics and even that is not enough

In short the nature of work is changing, business environment are becoming more global, what does this mean to a person looking for a job? It means the skills required at work are also changing

The old model is broken

It used to be the case that you go to school, get good grades, graduate and you get a job, but it’s not that easy anymore. Employers are looking for people with “commercial awareness and a can do attitude” In short people with behavior and skills that can add value to the organization

Technological changes, infrastructures, among other things now mean that the nature of psychological contracts is shifting from the traditional idea of a job for life to individuals enjoying several careers over their life time

This also means that remaining employable is now a challenge

When economists are talking about or calculating the unemployment number, they classify unemployment into three:

Structural unemployment

This form of unemployment occurs when the skills you have don’t match those that are needed by the employer. In short it is as a result of “mismatched skillset” The key thing to note is that skills and form of production change over time

For example:

Robotics in the manufacturing will mean unemployment in the production line but the speed and efficiency of production could lead to the need of sales people who understand what the company makes

Cyclical unemployment

With cyclical unemployment the given economy cannot provide enough jobs for people in need. What happens with jobs is that when economy is up companies tend to hire more staff and when economy is down companies cut back

Frictional unemployment

This is the period between moving or seeking another job. There are many reasons for this such are having moved to another town, the need to switch job types etc.
